Belgrade lays at the crossroads of East and West Europe and is located at the confluence of two rivers – Sava and Danube. It is actually surrounded by water from 3 sides and that’s why, from the very old times, it is known as the guardian of the river passages. Having the location it has, the city is rightfully referred to as the ‘gate’ of Balkans and ‘door’ of central Europe. The section running from Kalemegdan fortress, via Knez Mihailova Street and Terazije up to the Slavija square represents the city’s main ‘artery’.
Each step reveals a part of Belgrade’s rich history which used to have different names: "Hill for thinking", "Hill of battle and glory", "The house of wars", "The house of freedom”. It used to be the oriental town of traders and craftsmen, then western Christian rampart, it has been demolished and burnt, and then re-built.
