Kanjon Trešnjice
Location

The clear mountain river Trešnjica springs below the mountain Povlen in the western part of Serbia and after a 23 km long course it flows into the Drina, not far from Ljubovija. Immediately before the confluence with the Drina, Trešnjica dug a several kilometers long limestone gorge, about 500 m deep, with upright cliffs, which in some places takes on the characteristics of a canyon, especially in the area of the confluence of the Tribuća and Trešnjica. This nature reserve is also known for its griffon vulture colony. The attractiveness of the area is complemented by preserved watercourses, the remains of two medieval fortifications and ethno buildings.

We are going on a hiking tour where we will see the interesting and untouched nature of the Trešnjica canyon, which is one of the ideal places for hiking. After the walk, a visit to the charming place Vrhpolje on the banks of the Drina follows.

Special nature reserve Tresnjica canyon

The gorge of the river Trešnjica has been placed under protection in order to preserve one of the last habitats and populations of the natural rarity of the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus Habl.) And the habitats of other rare and endangered animal species that inhabit the picturesque gorges of Trešnjica and Tribuća.

The gorge is located in Podrinje (Azbukovica region), about 10 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Ljubovija. It is located in the lower part of the river and stretches in the east-west direction for several kilometers. The clear mountain river Trešnjica springs below Povlen in western Serbia and, after a 23 km long course, flows into the river Drina not far from Ljubovije. Just before merging with the Drina, Trešnjica dug a several kilometers long limestone gorge. About 500 m deep, with cliffs that rise vertically above the flow of the timid river, the gorge in some places takes on the characteristics of a canyon valley, especially in the area of the confluence of the Tribuća and Trešnjica rivers. The lateral gorges of Dubrašnica and Sušica, steep cliffs, sipars, openings and ditches contribute to the accentuated plasticity of the gorge.

The largest part of the reserve is overgrown with forests and thickets of black hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis), cerris (Quercus cerris), sessile oak (Quercus frainetto), black pine (Pinus nigra), juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus) and many other thermophilic species.

Many birds of prey nest in the Trešnjica gorge, such as the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), the chicken hawk (Accipiter gentilis), the bird bats (Accipiter nisus) and the buzzard (Buteo buteo). However, this gorge is distinguished, above all, by the colony of griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus), which, thanks to the organized feeding ground, is more and more numerous and stable.

Many species of mammals also live in that area: wild boar, fox, squirrel, rabbit, skunk, forest down, and there are also hedgehogs, otters and bats. The fast mountain river of cold water Trešnjica is a refuge for brown trout.

The organizer of the tour is the travel agency Explore Balkans doo. With this program is valid Rulebook on conducting tours by Explore Balkans doo.
