Location

Beljanica Mountain is located in the limestone terrains of Eastern Serbia, between the Mlava basin and the Žagubička valley in the north and the Resava river basin in the south. This mountain is rich in water, especially underground streams, which are characteristic of the karst terrain. An interesting phenomenon is submerged rivers, which disappear ("sink") below the earth's surface, and then appear elsewhere. The canyons of the rivers Resava and Kločanica complement the beauty of Beljanica. The mountain's highest peak (1339 m) is rocky, and it is assumed that due to its whiteness, the mountain was named Beljanica. The slopes are covered with beech and oak forests, and the biggest attraction is the Veliki Buk waterfall.

There are also caves of exceptional beauty on Beljanica. The most famous is the Resava Cave, and the lesser known, but rich in all types of cave jewelry are the Pioneer Cave, the Vlaška Cave, the Scout Cave, and the Great Atula. The deepest pit in Serbia is located on Beljanica, Ivkov Ponor Cave.

As part of our adventure, we will climb to the highest peak of Beljanica, where we will enjoy the view of the whole of Serbia. The trail leads through a beautiful landscape, where meadows alternate with forest, with lookouts of which the most beautiful is the one overlooking the canyon of the river Resava.

Nearby attractions

Veliki Buk Waterfall – located on the river Vrelo, a right tributary of the Resava, at about 380 m above sea level. It was created by the accumulation of tufa, so it is classified as an accumulation type of waterfall. At the foot of the waterfall is a lake surrounded by tufa blocks. Veliki Buk has long been considered the highest waterfall in Serbia, 25 m high. The source of the river Vrelo is called Veliko Vrelo and together with the waterfall, it is protected as a natural monument of Lisine.

Resava Cave – is one of the largest and most beautiful caves in Serbia. It was created by the work of the former water stream that existed in Divljakovačka cove before the subsidence of its bottom, this stream sank at the place of today's entrance to the cave. The total length of the cave with all channels, including impassable ones, is 2,800 m, and the length of the examined channels is about 400 m. It is rich in jewelry, from ornate forms to massive pillars. Some parts of the cave, with groups of stalagmites and stalactites, were named "Košnice", "Grandpa and grandma", "Tarana Family".

Manasija Monastery - is the endowment of the despot Stefan Lazarević, the construction began in 1407 and was finally completed in 1418. The monastery church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The monastery is recognizable by the walls that surround it, on which there are 11 towers, the most famous of which is the Despot's Tower. The distance between the towers is larger on the east, and smaller on the west side due to easier defense against the enemy. The tower that stands out in its size from the others is the Donjon Tower. Manasija's frescoes are among the greatest achievements of Serbian medieval painting. The most beautiful is the founder's composition on the west wall, on which despot Stefan holds a charter in one hand, and a model of a monastery in the other.

Vinatovača rainforest - Beljanica is special also because it has the only rainforest in Serbia - Vinatovača. Beech trees have been growing here for more than 350 years, with lush green canopies and reaching a height of up to 45 m. This oasis of peace and untouched nature has been declared a protected reserve.
