❄️The journey takes you through one of the most beautiful regions of Austria – the Salzkammergut area, known for its mountains rising above emerald lakes, peaceful alpine villages, and traditional Advent customs.
This tour combines two of Austria’s most beautiful winter worlds – the fairytale town of St. Wolfgang on Lake Wolfgangsee, one of the most romantic places in the Salzkammergut, and the mountain Advent in Filzmoos, which leads you through a lantern- and torch-lit forest to the mountain huts of Hofalmen.
🏞️ St. Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee – the Christmas capital of the Salzkammergut
On the northern slopes of the Salzburg Alps, by the crystal-clear Lake Wolfgangsee, lies one of the most beautiful villages in Austria – St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut.
Surrounded by the Schafberg and Zwölferhorn mountains, this place combines mountain tranquility with the elegance of old alpine tourism. During December, the shore is illuminated by hundreds of lanterns, and the centerpiece is the floating Peace Lantern – the symbol of the Wolfgangsee Advent. The streets are filled with the scent of cinnamon, roasted almonds, and mulled wine, while craftsmen in wooden stalls create handmade gifts and Christmas decorations.
It is a true encounter of Austria’s natural beauty and Christmas tradition – peaceful, warm, and picturesque.
🏔️ Filzmoos – a mountain village beneath the Bischofsmütze peak
On the southern side of the Salzburg Alps, beneath the dramatic peaks of the Dachstein massif and the distinctive Bischofsmütze rock (2,458 m), lies the mountain village of Filzmoos – known for its ski slopes, hiking trails, and the unique Hofalmen Advent.
A forest path illuminated by lanterns leads to the mountain huts Unterhofalm and Oberhofalm, through the scent of spruce and the silence of snowy slopes. Horse-drawn carriages transport visitors, and in the huts you can taste homemade cakes, teas, and mulled wine accompanied by traditional music.
This is not a typical Christmas market – it is a mountain experience of light, silence, and snow, reminiscent of a time when holidays were simple and warm. Unlike commercial Christmas markets, here you will find true Alpine peace – a mountain setting, gentle music, homemade specialties, and fresh snow underfoot.
🥾 Rossbrand (1,768 m) – a panoramic peak above the clouds
The second day brings a true mountain adventure. Rising above Filzmoos is Rossbrand, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Salzburg region. From the summit, you can enjoy views of more than 150 Alpine peaks – from the Tennengebirge and Radstädter Tauern to the magnificent Dachstein.
The trail leads through snowy forests and open slopes, ideal for a winter hike and for those who love the tranquility of nature. At the top, there is the Bischofalm mountain hut where hikers can warm up with a hot tea and enjoy the breathtaking views.
