The sight you must visit in Novi Sad is the Petrovaradin fortress. This impressive fortress has been referred to as the “Gibraltar of the Danube”. The city’s strategic position on the Danube also helped it grow into an important port settlement. It started life as a Roman fortress and various additions were made through the medieval period. It was reconstructed in the late 17th century by the Austrians to serve as a key military stronghold against the Ottoman Empire.

It takes time to get to know the Petrovaradin fortress because it is multi-layered and multi-storied - a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. It is a fortress that, in its underground, hides kilometres-long halls, warehouses, and rooms where people used to live under the siege. These rooms are impressive, even today, because of their air-conditioning system, heating, isolation, illumination, etc. The structure of the fortress also makes The Town Museum, The Gallery of Carpets, the artists’ quarter that gives an impression of being Parisian quarter Mont Martre, and even a hotel and a restaurant, from the terrace of which, there is a wonderful view of the town. Still, what is specific for Petrovaradin and Novi Sad is a “Drunken clock” on the Clock Tower, and it is said to be fast in summer, but slow in winter, probably to be always in accordance with time, just like the town that it stands above.

The biggest attraction of the Petrovaradin Fortress are underground military galleries or catacombs, which are associated with numerous legends. From a secret corridor under the Danube, then hundreds of kilometers of tunnels, to the church with the treasure of Maria Theresa.

The Petrovaradin catacombs are a four-story communication and defense system in the form of a labyrinth, with a length of 16 km.

On this tour, we take you on an adventure through the catacombs, where you will go back several hundred years. You will get to know the secret world of the Petrovaradin fortress, which was never conquered. Because of its security, in the 19th century it was precisely the treasury where the gold and silver of the Habsburg Monarchy was kept.

Additional notes:

• Equipment for the Petrovaradin Catacombs tour: Deep hiking shoes or sports sneakers with a stronger sole, and adequate clothing according to the weather conditions. Long-legged pants, hoodie, jacket - clothes you don't mind getting dirty! Bring a small backpack with the necessary equipment for a one-day action. Be sure to bring enough water (1 l), flashlights - hand or head, one meal, energy bars, fruit, and spare clothes for after the tour.
• Before descending into the catacombs, you will receive instructions from the guide (expedition leader) that everyone must follow.
• This tour is not recommended for people who have a fear of closed spaces and suffer from claustrophobia. 
• The tour is organized for at least 18 registered passengers.
• The number of people to pass through the catacombs is limited to a maximum of 20 people.
• Price is for members of "Explore Serbia". You can find membership information here. For those who do not have a membership card, the price is 4200 dinars.
• Own transportation: in case you come by your own transport, the price of the tour is 2200 dinars (with Explore Serbia membership cards) or 3200 dinars (for those who do not have a membership card).
• Accident insurance: in order for this type of insurance to be active, you need to send us your personal number (JMBG) when registering.
• In case of insufficient number of registered passengers or unfavorable weather conditions, the deadline for notification of the postponement or cancellation of the tour by the organizer is 2 days before departure.

• Trip cancellations by passengers: 

  • In case of cancellation of the trip by the passenger, 5 or more days before the tour date, the Agency retains the amount of 20% of the reservation costs.
  • In case the traveler cancels the trip less than 5 days before the trip, the agency reserves the right to the entire amount. In case of replacement by another passenger who is found either by the passenger himself or by the Agency, 90% of the paid amount is returned to the passenger.
  • In case of illness of the passenger and cancellation up to 3 days before the tour, the paid money can be returned or the amount can be transferred for another tour organized by the Agency, and the traveler is obliged to send medical documentation about the illness in writing. In case of illness of the traveler and cancellation less than 3 days before the tour, in addition to sending medical documentation about the illness, the traveler is obliged to compensate the Agency for the incurred costs (transportation and travel organization costs), and part of the money can be refunded.
