The Kučaj Mountains stretch between the Resava and Zlotska Rivers and Crni Timok. They belong to the group of Carpathian-Balkan mountains, they are mainly built of slate and limestone, so there are numerous karst landforms, such as caves, coves, and pits. The entire area of the Kučaj Mountains is a real challenge for adventurers and lovers of caves and speleology. The Kučaj mountains are also the largest uninhabited area in Serbia. The area is also rich in cultural and historical heritage, since prehistoric times.

South Kučaj is part of the huge mountain massif of the Kučaj Mountains, known for its dense forests, hidden springs, and deep canyons. This area is one of the last true wildernesses in Serbia, with sparsely populated areas and rich flora and fauna. It is one of the least explored but most beautiful mountain areas in Serbia. This vast wooded area hides numerous natural gems, one of the most famous being Grza Spring, the source of a crystal clear mountain river that forms beautiful waterfalls and cascades. The path around the hot spring passes through dense beech forest and limestone rocks, giving a feeling of untouched wilderness.

On this hiking tour, we will follow a circular path to the peak of Vis at 873 m, which is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in South Kučaj. Towards the beginning of spring, the spring of Grze has an increased flow of water. You will enjoy the sounds of nature waking up, the clarity of the river, and fresh greenery.

Hiking tour on South Kučaj

  • Departure for the hike around 9:30 a.m. from the Grza Spring excursion site.
  • The tour starts from the "Đorđe Živković" mountain lodge, located next to the crystal-clear Vrel Grze. The first few kilometers of the trail lead gently uphill through a dense beech and oak forest, following the course of the Grza River. This section is pleasant for walking, with numerous places to rest next to small springs and viewpoints.
  • After about 5 km you come to a steeper climb to the top of Vis. As the altitude increases, the forest becomes sparser and the views more beautiful. At the very top, located at 873 m, a fantastic panoramic view of South Kučaj and the valley of the Morava River awaits.
  • After a break at the top, the descent leads on another path that returns in a circle towards the Grza Spring. This section is less demanding, with a gentle descent through forest areas.
  • Tour of the Grze Spring which is one of the most beautiful and clean springs in Serbia. This magical place, hidden in dense forests, offers the opportunity to enjoy untouched nature, clear water, and rich flora and fauna. Grza is a mountain river that springs from limestone rocks, and the water is so clean that it can be drunk directly from the source. The main spring is located at about 480 m above sea level and comes out of a cave opening in the limestone rocks, while there is another, smaller spring a little lower. The water temperature throughout the year is around 8°C, which makes it one of the coldest rivers in this part of Serbia. From the hot spring itself, the river forms a series of smaller waterfalls and rapids, which additionally contribute to the magical ambiance. The surroundings of the hot spring are covered with beech and oak forests, and mountain trout live in the water, proof of the exceptional purity of the water.
  • Information about a hiking trail: easy-moderate, 14 km long, with a total ascent and descent of about 500 m, lasting about 5 to 6 hours with breaks.
  • After the hike, we can organize lunch in one of the nearby restaurants at the Grze Spring picnic area.
  • Departure for Belgrade where we will arrive by 9 pm.
