The old mountain belongs to a group of monumental mountains, and its main wreath extends approximately from Zajecar to the Black Sea in the length of about 550 km.
Another name for the Old Mountain is the Balkans, after which the whole Balkan peninsula got its name.
The total area of the Stara Planina massif which occupies Serbia is 1802 km². A protected natural monument is protected with numerous reserves, waterfalls, relict plant and animal species.
